Rocks and Minerals We will be starting our Science studies with a unit about Rocks and Minerals. Students will be asked to go on a rock hunt and bring rocks into class. These rocks will be used for various activities throughout the unit. The students will chose one rock to be their "Pet Rock". During class they will work through stations where they are able to explore characteristics about their rocks. Such activities include measuring and comparing the weight of their rock. They will be able to compare and contrast their rocks with other classmates. The students will then go on to examine the other rocks in their collection. They will have the opportunity to identify colour, lustre, texture, hardness, and the presence of carbonates. In the final weeks of Rocks and Minerals we will be learning about various components within soil samples. Students will doing experiments to demonstrate erosion. Students will also be able to describe common uses of rocks and minerals.
